Elena Tarabakina, a footwear designer with a passion for sublime aesthetics and texture, has created a collection that challenges traditional notions of waste materials. Inspired by the abundance of waste in the studio and manufacturing process, Tarabakina has developed a new material called "Leather Like Wood." This innovative material is made from reusing leather offcuts, making it both cost-effective and sustainable.
The inspiration for the collection came from the aesthetic of modern architecture and the philosophy of Japanese design. Clear geometric shapes showcase the beauty of the material, while a philosophical approach to the material reflects the asceticism of the Japanese mindset. Tarabakina was also influenced by contemporary art and sculptures, particularly the cubic sculptures of Peter Alexander and Larry Bell. This influence can be seen in the visual language of the collection.
The sustainable approach to the material aligns with modern architecture's focus on eco-friendly materials and energy efficiency. By repurposing leather offcuts, Tarabakina has created a material that not only reduces waste but also offers a luxurious appearance. The material is versatile and can be used in a variety of applications, from accessories and footwear to interiors.
The collection features multifunctional containers that encourage visual meditation and mind harmony. While they serve as cubes, boxes, and bottles, their minimalistic nature aims to evoke emotional responses from the audience. Each element of the collection reminds us of the ambiguous nature of the material world.
Techniques such as 3D modeling, 3D printing, inlaying, CNC milling, casting, and electroplating were used to bring Tarabakina's vision to life. The dimensions of the containers range from width 150mm, depth 80mm, to height 200mm.
Elena Tarabakina's "Leather Like Wood" collection was created during her time at the London College of Fashion, located in Golden Lane, London. The project spanned from 2015 to 2016.
This innovative design has received recognition in the form of the Iron A' Design Award in 2017. The award is given to well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements. Tarabakina's collection exemplifies these qualities, integrating industry best practices and competent technical characteristics.
